Safety of EndoTool Versus Fixed-Dose Insulin Infusions for DKA or HHS in the Emergency Department

Setting: 433-bed not-for-profit acute care hospital

Objective

This retrospective study compares the safety of EndoTool glucose management software to a standard fixed-dose insulin infusion protocol for patients presenting to an emergency department with DKA or HHS.

Setting

433-bed not-for-profit acute care hospital.

Results

  • Incidence of hypoglycemia <70 mg/dL was 0.00% of patients with EndoTool versus 4.7% with a standard fixed-dose insulin infusion protocol.

Conclusions

Titration of insulin using glucose management software (EndoTool) may be safer than a standard fixed-dose insulin infusion protocol for patients presenting in an emergency department with DKA or HHS, as evidenced by significantly lower incidence of hypoglycemia.
